Pickerel Creek, Vickery, Ohio - Drone Spraying
Area Treated: The shoreline along Pickerel Creek in Vickery, Ohio, required effective herbicide application (drone spraying) to manage invasive vegetation that was impacting the riparian zone.
Target Species Impact: Invasive Phragmites australis, with its shallow root systems, displaced native vegetation, leading to shoreline erosion. This monoculture reduced habitat diversity and compromised bank stability.
Desired Outcome: The objective was to suppress and control Phragmites stands to slow erosion, protect the shoreline’s integrity, and create favorable conditions for the re-establishment of native plants.
Why Sutable Aerial Solutions: Dense shoreline vegetation and limited access made consistent ground application of herbicides challenging. Drone-based herbicide application (drone spraying) provided a precise and uniform coverage along the shoreline, minimizing soil disturbance and protecting sensitive aquatic areas.
Phragmites (common reed) in Ohio is a widespread, invasive perennial grass that aggressively takes over wetlands, ditches, and shorelines, particularly around Lake Erie, outcompeting native plants and degrading wildlife habitat, though control efforts using herbicides, mechanical removal, and burning are ongoing by groups like The Nature Conservancy and the Ohio Invasive Plants Council. It spreads rapidly via underground stems (rhizomes) and windblown seeds, forming dense monocultures that block views and access, but a native species (Phragmites americanus) also exists, making identification and management challenging.
